Pat McCrary enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 23, 1966. Upon completion of basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas, he completed Advanced Individual Training (AIT) as a Construction Machine Operator at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He reported to the 87th Combat Engineer Bn. in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, until July 1967. Pat returned to Fort Lewis, Washington, and attended NCO Academy before being promoted to E-5. He returned to Phu Bai, Vietnam, in May 1968 and joined the 27th Combat Engineer Battalion until his honorable discharge on February 14, 1969.
Pat lived in Colorado for 21 years, where he worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Colorado Department of Transportation. He moved with his wife and two sons to North Carolina in 1990 and currently resides in Youngsville, NC.
He joined the American Legion Post 52 in 2016. He currently serves on the Executive Committee and was named Legionnaire of the Year in 2022.
