About John Laney:

In 1978, John enlisted in the Army, completing basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, followed by infantry and airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon graduation, he reported for duty at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

After being selected for Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS), John advanced to the Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC). Completed specialized training with dual qualifications as a Weapons and Communications Sergeant. He was then assigned to Operational Detachment Alpha 765, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group and Selection (SFAS) and completed the Special Forces Combat Divers Course in Key West, Florida.

During John's final year of service, he joined the Field Operations Group (FOG) under the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), where he leveraged his unconventional warfare and SERE training in preparation for a follow-on hostage rescue operation in Iran after the unsuccessful Operation Eagle Claw mission.
