Royal W. Jones enlisted in the North Carolina National Guard on July 27, 1951 and was discharged January 27, 1954. He then enlisted in the US Army on January 28, 1954 and took his basic training at Camp Gordon, Georgia. He went through 8 weeks of amphibious truck driver training at Fort Story, Virginia specializing in driving the army duck. On July 9, 1954 he was assigned to Pusan, Korea and arrived there in July 1954 and remained in Pusan until May of 1955. Then he was assigned to the 38th Parallel from May 1955 until November 1955 when he returned back to Fort Story, Virginia. Jones was honorably discharged January 27, 1957.
Jones joined American Legion Post 52 in July, 1959 and has had continuous membership in the post since that time. During his time in the post he has served on many committees as well as Sergeant At Arms for many years. He served as Post Commander in 1978 to 1979 and for 1980 to 1981. He also served as Post Commander for the years 1999 to 2000 and 2001 to 2002. Jones has been in charge of the Post's Firing Squad for several years and continues that duty now. He has held the post position as Chef of the Chitling Strut from 1973 to 2010 and has the title of Chitling King of North Carolina. He was named Legionnaire of The Year in 1984 and in 2008. He is also a member of the Forty & Eight having served since 1968 and is still active in 2011.
