Harvey Satterwhite enlisted in the North Carolina Army National Guard on March 15, 1978 and attended basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He served in the 5th Bn 113th FA Brigade from 1978 until 1996 and was honorably discharged on October 31, 1996 as an E-8. During his enlistment he attended numerous schools in addition to those required as well as being Recondo Instructor qualified, 13B Instructor certified, with a primary MOS of 13Z5MH Field Artillery and a secondary MOS of 11B50 Infantryman. Satterwhite was awarded the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara on December 3rd, 1994 from the United States Field Artillery Association.
Commander Satterwhite joined American Legion Post 52 in 2003 and has had continuous membership in the post since that time. During this time he has served as Vice Commander, Post Commander and Facility Manager. He currently serves on the Executive Committee, Food Service Committee, Facility and Grounds Committee, Fund Raising Committee, Membership and Americanism Committees, Heads up the Stand Up For America Committee, and is a member of the Post Firing Squad. He has attended .NC. Legion collage for three years and is a Graduate of the American Legion Extension Institute.
Commander Satterwhite was named N. C. Post Commander of The Year for 2009 - 2010 at the fall conference.
