Thomas J. Harris is a U. S. Navy Veteran having joined the Navy on July 4, 1942 for 6 years. He took his basic training at Newport, Rhode Island and was assigned to the transport ship USS Leedstown, AP-73. Harris was a survivor when the ship was sunk by enemy torpedoes from German warplanes at Cape Matifou which is approximately 14 miles from Algiers off the coast of North Africa on November 9, 1942. He then was assigned to the USS Wilkes, DD-441 on January 3, 1943 and served on escort duty to North Africa. Afterwards the ship went to the South Pacific serving in Saipan, Tinian, New Guinea, Leyte Gulf, and Okinawa while serving with the Third Fleet. He also participated in the Liberation of the Philippines and at Guam until the Japanese surrendered ending World War II. The ship was decommissioned in 1946 and he then served on the USS Agerholm, DD-826 and the USS Rogers, DD-254 until his discharge in 1948.
Harris joined the American Legion Post 52 in 1992 and has had continuous membership since that time. During his time in the Legion he has served on various committees and responsible for ordering, maintaining, erecting and flying the flags for the post from 1993 until he gave up that responsibility in 2006. He is still serving on the Post's Firing Squad and is on the Executive Committee. He has been Sergeant At Arms for several years.
Harris was named Legionnaire of the Year for the year 1996-1997 and again for the year 2001-2002.
